  • SIP trunk configuration
  • Extensions, ring groups and queues
  • IVR and time conditions
  • Call recording and retention

Security & hardening

FreePBX deployment architecture

FreePBX manages the Asterisk configuration layer; the platform around it u2014 firewall, backups, provisioning and monitoring u2014 is what keeps it stable in production.

  1. 01

    Carrier edge

    • SIP trunks
    • Outbound routes
    • Inbound DID routing

Trunk failover order and DID-to-destination mapping documented per number range.

  2. 02

    Security layer

    • Responsive firewall
    • TLS / SRTP
    • Admin ACL

Web administration restricted to management networks; intrusion detection tuned to avoid locking out valid endpoints.

  3. 03

    FreePBX / Asterisk

    • Extensions
    • Ring groups & queues
    • IVR & time conditions
    • Call recording

Module versions pinned and updated on a maintenance window, not automatically in business hours.

  4. 04

    Operations

    • Config backup
    • CDR reports
    • Monitoring & alerts

Scheduled configuration backups stored offsite, with a documented restore procedure.

  5. 05

    Users

    • IP phones
    • Mobile clients
    • Reception console

Endpoints auto-provisioned from templates so replacements are a swap, not a rebuild.

Frequently asked questions

Can FreePBX handle multi-site offices?

Yes. Sites are usually connected over VPN with per-site outbound routes, local trunk breakout where regulation or cost requires it, and inter-site dialling by extension range.

How are upgrades handled without downtime risk?

Configuration is backed up first, the change is applied in a maintenance window, and a rollback path (snapshot or restore) is defined before touching the system.

What causes call recording to fill the disk?

Recording every call with no retention policy. We set retention by queue or extension class, move archives to separate storage, and alert on disk thresholds before they become outages.

Do commercial modules matter?

Only where they replace real engineering effort u2014 for example endpoint management at scale. We flag which paid modules earn their cost in your environment and which do not.
