Engineering capabilities

  • Cluster and quorum design
  • ZFS / Ceph storage layout
  • Container and VM workloads
  • Snapshot strategy

Security & hardening

  • Two-factor administrative access
  • Firewall policy per node and VM
  • Separated backup credentials

Proxmox VE cluster architecture

Proxmox delivers clustering, KVM/LXC workloads and integrated backup on commodity hardware u2014 provided quorum, storage and network design are correct from day one.

  1. 01

    Cluster & quorum

    • Node 1
    • Node 2
    • Node 3 / QDevice

Odd quorum count so the cluster survives a node loss without split-brain; corosync on a dedicated link.

  2. 02

    Storage

    • ZFS local pools
    • Ceph pool (scale-out)
    • NFS / iSCSI target

ZFS for single-node integrity and snapshots; Ceph where shared, self-healing storage is required.

  3. 03

    Networking

    • Linux bridge / VLAN aware
    • Bonded uplinks
    • Cluster + storage networks

Cluster, storage and guest traffic separated so replication cannot starve production traffic.

  4. 04

    Workloads

    • KVM virtual machines
    • LXC containers
    • HA groups

Containers for lightweight services, VMs where full isolation or unusual kernels are needed.

  5. 05

    Backup

    • Proxmox Backup Server
    • Offsite sync
    • Restore verification

Deduplicated incremental backups with pruning, plus scheduled restore tests.

Frequently asked questions

Is a two-node Proxmox cluster safe?

Only with a QDevice acting as a third vote. Two nodes alone cannot form quorum reliably after a failure, which is a common cause of unexpected cluster lockups.

ZFS or Ceph?

ZFS for small clusters and strong local data integrity with snapshots and replication. Ceph when you need shared storage across nodes with self-healing and horizontal scale u2014 it requires more nodes, more network and more operational maturity.

How does Proxmox compare on cost?

There is no per-socket licence for the software; the paid element is an optional enterprise repository subscription. The real comparison is total operational cost, including your team's familiarity with the platform.

Can we migrate from VMware to Proxmox?

Yes. Disks are converted or imported per VM, guest tooling is swapped, and workloads are moved in waves with rollback available until each wave is validated.
